Date: January 23, 1971
Flight Info: A Korean Air Lines Fokker F27 bound from Sokcho to Seoul.
The Story: A 19-year-old high-school dropout who collected newspaper clippings about skyjackings, Kim took over the plane by showing the pilot four homemade hand grenades. He asked to be flown to the North Korean town of Sinpo, where one of his four brothers may have settled after defecting during the Korean War. Several South Korean air force jets intercepted the hijacked plane before it reached the border; they forced it to make an emergency landing on a beach by firing warning shots. Once plane came to a halt, the copilot tackled Kim in an effort to end the hijacking. Kim responded by detonating one of his grenades, killing himself and the copilot.
The Upshot: Three security guards at Sokcho’s airport were arrested for failing to have searched Kim prior to boarding, and two cabinet ministers resigned in disgrace.
